ETCHING CHANNELS in DIAMOND

  • By ion irradiation to the requisite depth a region of the sample can be turned to amorphous sp2 carbon.
  • This amorphous material can be etched away, leaving a channel.
  • For application in devices, channel edges need to be smooth.
  • For such applications desirable to know where the sp2/sp3 boundary falls.
  • Must confirm our geometrical criteria with study of electron density.
