THESE ARE Dr Joan Adler's lecture notes for wn114053 - Winter 2011/12

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • All emails relating to administration or homework from your t2 account to wn114053@phstudy.technion.ac.il only.

  • Main Course web page with links to homework, syllabus and information sheet at http://phycomp.technion.ac.il/~webteach.

  • Hope we have an enjoyable semester. I will do my part by preparing lectures and exams and seeing you IN office hours, you do your part by coming to lectures and coming to see me IN office hours.

  • There are lots of links to applets, youtube and movies in the notes, please look at them before the lectures!!!! send me more links or make some movies yourself. (Anyone who wants to translate existing ones to hebrew please volunteer.)

  • The old Physics 3h video has very little overlap with Physics 3.

  • You should make your own summaries - these notes are:
    1. a resource of equations (to save your writing in class),
    2. images and videos to let you look ahead and revise afterwards,

    and FINALLY
how your lecturer feels about talking to students any time between now and before the exams, especially in office hours how she feels about talking to students after and during exams when they say we did not do this in class but were not even in class to check this.
Just so you know - everything in class and printed in the solutions to the class exercises is in the material unless I say it is not.

  • Announcement (for Windows) Explains why the site is a little bit in English and mainly in Hebrew presented as images to work on all browsers.

  • The textbook is very important. So that you understand this well we let you take it into exams with you. I know its in English or actually American. IT is EASY English with lots of pictures. As an alternative to a book from sifriat dekan hastudentim consider ordering a used copy from Amazon. The covers and appendices in the textbook are very useful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sometimes I will show you tables and say - good idea to add this to pages for behina. The next link is an example.

  • Link to site about electromagnetic radiation .

  • These notes are being revised constantly and will be ready when the ``updated for 2011/12 sign'' is in place - usually a few days before the lecture. I want you to check out the site each week, not download and photocopy at the start of the semester.

  • Please report all bugs in the site by email.

  • You can make your own pdf version of these pages including all the links by using the WinRAR software. You can dowmload this package for a free 40-day trial at the rarsoft website . See also Omniformat, another free pdf converter.

  • These notes are adapted to Physics 3 from the Physics 3m notes of Prof. Arnon Dar and co-ordinated with Dr Adler's lectures. Lots of the material was typed by Shirit Cohen. You can also look at the notes of other lecturers of the coursehere H-O-W-E-V-E-R the material in the course is defined by the material covered in lectures and targilim of Spring 2010, NOT by what is on these webpages.

  • SECRET - HOW TO GET A GOOD GRADE in PHYSICS 3!

Physics 3 - Modern Physics - ph114053 - is the physics behind the hi-tech revolution!

One hundred years from a revolution in physics to a revolution in technology. We will learn about the physics that was awarded many Nobel prizes , and also a few Chemistry Nobel Prizes, especially the 2012 prize to Prof. Schectman, see Condensed Matter, Structure of solids. See also Physics 3 projects from 2010/11 about Nobel prize winners.
